Orange — 601 Michigan

Orange is a mixed-use building at 601 Michigan Street NE in downtown Grand Rapids, completed on September 15, 2016. The building holds 3,200 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and 18 residential units above. Together with its companion building Purple at 555 Michigan, Orange was designed to activate a vacant block on Michigan Street while supporting future neighborhood business.

The two-building development meaningfully upgraded the streetscape with curb and biking cuts, new walks, new trees, and landscaped areas, delivered as part of the same $7.1 million construction package. The Orange ground-floor commercial space is currently positioned for the next-generation neighborhood tenant.

Orange and Purple are part of the broader Mid Towne Village master development that anchors Third Coast Development’s footprint on Michigan Street. Both buildings continue to demonstrate the firm’s preferred approach to vacant urban blocks: build the right two-or-three-story scale, deliver an actual residential program, and let the building seed the next round of redevelopment up and down the corridor.
